NFL No More??

I found out today from watching ESPN that there will be no NFL season this year. Or at least for now there will not be one.  I havne't been following this story since the beginning but I do know some details. From what I remember it started during this past season when team owners proposed for an 18 game regular season. Currently a regular season is only 16 games. Then in reaction to that, NFL players and the Players Association fought against that proposal. Players agreed that adding tweo regular season games would be too much stress on their bodies. They also said that it would increase chances of injury which would not be good heading into the playoffs. Then today the Players Association decertified. I don't know exactly what that means, but to me it means no football. What is your view about this situation and what effects will it have (social, economic, etc.)?

Food

I really liked the topic given to us today in class. I like that we can all relate to it because we all eat. Now most of us have similar opinions or can relate more easily when discussing food. But during discussions over the questions asked I was really intrigued by some of the responses. I found it really interesting how food can separate or combine different cultures all across the world. Because some things in one place can be viewed in a totally different was somewhere else. For example, I have a friend from El Salvador and with his culture it is very rude to burp and slurp your noodles. But in China slurping noodles and burping is welcomed. And the video we watched was pretty interesting. If I had the chance I may try some things like spider-legs or some insects. But probably not eyeballs or pig blood. I think I even saw a beaver somewhere during the video as well. That may super delicious for some cultures and people but is most likely not what we eat normally now or growing up. I haven't looked in the book to see what exercise we might be doing next but it might be a fun one with this topic.

Efficient Energy

In our last homework assignment I found an article about UNT and the way they supply power to the campus. A majority of the energy currently used in from coal power. But now there is a nationwide organization working with other colleges and universities to try and reduce the amount of coal energy to zero. Coal is a fossil fuel which when burned releases toxic and harmful contaminants into the air. So now the organization is working with President Rawlins to help create and use different ways of supplying energy to UNT. When walking to class one day I even met a supporter of this movement and she was handing out fliers or taking surveys or something. While I continued to talk to her, she asked if I used the gym on campus. I told her I do. The she continued to tell me that our gym uses a unique way of supplying energy to create electricity to the gym. When people ride bikes or use similar machines, they are hooked up to a generator or something which creates the electricity needed for the building. I didn't know that and think it's pretty cool. What are some other ideas you may have to create efficient energy for UNT or anything else that need electricity?

Is Machine Smarter than Man?

Recently this week on Jeopardy, two of the most winningest men ever to play faced off against the super-computer named Watson. On a 30-question game board the two men only managed to answer 5 questions corectly between them in the Double Jeopardy round. One guy ended up with $4,800 and the other with $10,400. But Watson blew them out of the park with a whopping $35,374. That seems pretty ambarrasing to me. I don't know if that was the last show they will compete in, but hopefully the humans will have a chance to redeem themselves against the machine. So my thoughts are will man create a machine so intelligent that will eventually threaten man? An example that came to my mind is from the movie Terminator. I hope everyone has seen at least one of the Terminators to know what SkyNet is. But if not, it is a super-computer that pretty much wants to destroy all of mankind to us from ourseleves. Or something like that. If I'm wrong you may correct me.

#3 Super Granny!!

If you haven't already seen the video on YouTube or on the news, you find it enjoyable to watch. In the clip it shows a bunch of thieves robbing a jewelry store (I'm not sure of the location). The along comes this little old lady dressed in a red coat and a purse on her shoulder. She starts swinging her purse at the thieves over and over. The funny thing is they react as if they have no idea what to do. They try and dodge her and eventually they take off. So was she doing the right thing thing by trying to stop them or was she unaware of what possible danger she could have been in? For all I know they could have had a weapon and really hurt the old lady. But since she wasn't harmed and she did prevent them from snatching up more stuff, she is a hero.

Superbowl Sunday

This sunday is Super Bowl 45 which includes the Greeen Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers won the superbowl  in 2009 and 2006, but the last time the Packers won was superbowl in 1998. These two teams have a historic rivalry which began in 1921. And out of all the games they have played against one another, Chicago leads the series 92-84-6. Every year the Madden videogame simulate a single game with both teams in the superbowl. This year's simulation resulted in the Bears winning. Both teams have a solid defense and many weapons on offense. I, myself, would like to see the Packers win just because they have not won a superbowl in a while. And also because I do not like the stellers quarterback as much as the packers quarterback. So who do you think will win and what factors contribute to your decision?

Newspaper article analysis

Today in class we selected a news article and took a viewpoint to argue from. It was kinda hard to decxide which view to take and then what argument to make. There were a lot of options to choose from after we came up with all the rhetors and issues and audiences. Did your group have this kind of issue ow were you all able to just flow with it? And some of the articles I saw were pretty interesting articles. What was your article about?
